Metal bellows used in semiconductor manipulators and actuators are precision-engineered sealing/actuation elements designed for ultra-clean, vacuum or near-vacuum environments.
They combine the sealing function with motion control, allowing manipulators/actuation systems to move components (wafers, pins, shutters, etc.) with micron-level repeatability while maintaining hermetic integrity.
These systems need zero leakage, zero contamination, long cycle life, and compatibility with aggressive process gases/chemistries.
Operating
| Temperatures: | Wide range; possibly from cryogenic or -100 °C up to +200-300 °C or more depending on gas/process, with cycling. |
| Pressure: | From high vacuum up to some bars depending on the application. |
| Speed: | Dependent on mechanism; many manipulators are slow, precise motion; actuators may need faster response. Repeatability often in microns. |
* These operating limits are non-concurrent. In general, an incease in the seal size, or temperature, or rotating speed can reduce the maximum operating pressure limit of the metal bellow component.
